The vast majority of that list would be good choices, with a few exceptions: The Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Flaubert works are too advanced for the great majority of teens, and Ulysses too complex probably for any teen. On the other end, the books by Edgar Rice Burroughs are too simple. If you’re looking for fast paced adventure in fantastic settings, there are many writers more recent than Burroughs who do it far better.

Of the books listed, my personal favorites are Pride and Prejudice, The Trial, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Huckleberry Finn (although the last 1/3 or so of Huck Finn is not nearly as good as the earlier sections). The Sherlock Holmes books on the list are also great, and I loved reading them at about your age.

I would begin with the smallest book and work your way up to the largest book. If you start with the largest book first, you might get overwhelmed.
I would recomend reading Alice and wonderland. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I got through it in less than a day too. I have a shot attention span so that’s saying a lot

Pride and Prejudice, Turn of the Screw and Portrait of Dorian Gray. I am excited to see the list and wish you luck reading all of these fine works.

Christmas Toy, The (1986)

IMDB rating: 8.10

Plot: When no people are around, the toys still play in the playroom. But since a toy will be frozen forever if a person catches it out of position, they have to be very careful. It’s Christmas Eve, and Rugby the Tiger remembers how he was the Christmas Toy last year, and thinks he’s going to be unwrapped again. And it’s up to Applethe Doll, whom Rugby supplanted as favorite toy, to tell him what’s in store. But Rugby won’t believe her, and tries to get into the Christmas package and lets Meteora, Queen of the Asteroids loose. Unfortunately, she doesn’t know she’s a toy, and thinks she’s landed among aliens. And it’s up to Apple, Mew (the Cat’s toy mouse), and the other toys to get Rugby out of the box and Meteora back in it before they’re found and frozen.

Are these perfect gifts for my ten year old girl, turning 11, soon?!?
We have not had a real birthday in 2 years. I decided to get her a few things. Here is the list of things I got her for Christmas and what I will give her on her birthday. Tell me what you think:

Christmas Presents from Friends and Family and me:

Her Grandma gave her a IPod Classic, her grandmother actually gave IPod Classics to all of her Grandchildren with a $20.00 I Tunes gift card. She also gave the kids, a IDog and accessories for it.

Grandmother: Her other Grandmother took her to the mall before Christmas Eve and let her make her own bear at build a bear workshop, her Grandmother said that was her only gift.. She surprised her on Christmas with a new American Girl Doll! (Her 10th one!)

Grandfather: Her Grandfather went all out and bought her making kits, tie dying kits, you name it. He got her like 10 boxes and it had 3 per box.

Grandfather: He gave her plenty of gift cards, money and a wallet. He surprised her with clothing and blankets too.

Aunt: Her Aunt gave her a makeup kit. Lip Liner, Eye Liner, Eye Shadow, Cover Up, Lip Stick, Lip Gloss, Blush, you name it! It had different colors too…

Uncle: Her Uncle gave her a new pair of Converse and Crocs.

Aunt: Her Aunt gave her a Winter Wardrobe before winter, as one of her gifts, and for Christmas she gave her a board game and Uggs.

Uncle: Her Uncle gave her different little things. He gave her candy too and a cake maker.

Sisters and Brothers: He sisters and brothers put their money together to give her a new toys. You name it.

Parents: We gave her toys, roller blades, and a scooter. We also gave her sleds and snowboards, but we gave it to her before Christmas because of the big snow storm. For all her siblings and her, we bought a Wii with like 30 games.

Santa: Santa got her a few toys, a new oboe, a $100 dollar gift card to the mall, little things, school supplies, duct tape (different colors) board games, chalk, art set, jewerly maker, cosmetic maker, and a labtop. We also had new dvd’s and video games.

Here is her birthday list of things we already planned out, Her family calls in saying what they are going to get her, we give them money to buy it. They usually buy expensive things. Here is the list.

The Grandmothers (4 because my parents are divorced and my husbands parents are divorced) are going to give her a Summer Camp Application to Horse Back Riding Camp.

The Grandfathers (4) are going to give her a new pair of converse, a new pair of crocs, a new pair of uggs and some clothing for her. A new wardrobe.

The Aunts (6) are going to give her a DSI. She got a nintendo from them last year, with like 25 games and she is going to get a DSI and 10 new games. She will have like 60 games now!

The Uncles (6) are going to give her a new bike. Last year they split into 3 uncles per gift. One gift was a surf board, another was a dirt bike. Everyone in our family has ATV’s, dirtbikes and surfboards, so… They also are giving her fun things for the beach, since we are going to Hawaii this summer from June 20th to August 10th. Her Horse Back Riding Camp is June 10th to June 15th and August 10th to August 15th.

Brothers and Sisters (3) They are going to give her toys, and gift cards. They are also giving her art sets.

Mom: I am giving her a new puppy. She has a lot of pets. We have fish, goats, pigs, sheep, donkeys, horses, chickens, cats, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, bunnies and we are missing a dog. Her siblings requested some of those animals and we raise them together. We also have small animals like frogs and hermit crabs. We run a family farm so we have to have all of the barn animals and her siblings requested small animals and cats. We are getting a parrot/finch/dove for our farm for a Valentines Day present. She always wanted a dog. Last week I found a cute, small puppy that was 1 week and she is ready on the day before her birthday. We adopted it 2 days ago. That is her surprise. We are also throwing a surprise party for family and another for friends :)

Dad: Her dad is giving her a makeover to her room. He is painting her room and getting new furniture. He is also giving her a new television in her room with tivo and cable and a dvd player.

We have family friends who are sending her little computer games, things like that. She is also recieving a expensive piggy bank…

PLEASE DONT CALL HER SPOILED, WE DO THIS TO EVERYONE. EVERYONE LOVES HER AND WE LOVE THEM. SHE IS LIVING THE LIFE.

That’s way too much stuff for a 10 year old. She doesn’t need a ton of clothes because she’ll just outgrow them quickly.

Why not just do something together? Memories last a lot longer than Uggs.

Does any ten year old get all of this crap? My ten year old has some of this stuff and after reading this novel, you might be in debt after spoiling your daughter like this. My step daughter just turned eleven and I got her Uggs, A puppy, A new bike, a gift card and a doll. You give her all of this stuff?

Can you run 32 bit XP Pro on a 64 bit Machine?
I have 64 bit computer, with Windows 7 64 bit and Windows XP Pro x64 currently being dual booted on it. I am running into some problems trying to run a few older programs (as in 10+ years old). I dual booted XP Pro x64 to get some of the programs to work. They still won’t work on XP. This is the error I get:
The version of this file is not compatible with of Windows you’re running. Check your computer’s system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher.

I have a version of Windows XP Pro 32-Bit laying around, but when I try to boot off of it, I just get a black screen. I had to slipstream the SATA drivers onto my XP Pro x64, so I was wondering if I did that again if it would work?

I guess the questions I would enjoy answers to are:
Will a 32 bit OS work on a 64 bit Machine? (If so, basic instructions to install it would be appreciated.)
and/or
Seeing my error message, does that mean that not even 32 bit XP will run these programs, and I need to go older? (With Windows 2000 or 98?)
To the most recent response:
Unfortunately my processor does not support vitrualization, I have already looked into that option.

PCs have been able to support 64bit since a pentium 4 and Athlon 64 years ago. Its just the operating system which is 64bit not the hardware.

If it were me i would use window 7 to shrink a existing partition of your hard drive and then add a new partition with the spare space (you right lick on my computer then go properties and theres an option to do it somewhere there). Format the new partition with your windows XP 32bit or 64 bit Cd. Then just install the 32bit Xp on the clean partition.

It should be ok without the slipstreamed cd. Although i have used a sliptreamed one for raid for ages so could be wrong.

You might have already done this but its just what i would do.

Simon P | Nov 22, 2009

Yes
blamay22000 | Nov 22, 2009

If it’s 64 bit as in Core2Duo/Quad, i7, Athlon 64/X2/Phenom then yes, there should be no problems.

If its a CPU such as the Itanium (unlikely) which does not include 32 bit instructions, then no.
Misc Tech Advice | Nov 22, 2009

Install virtual pc from Microsofts website and it has xp compatibility mode, I think it will do 32bit.

The Trouble with Angels

The Trouble with Angels
The Trouble with Angels (1966)

IMDB rating: 7.20

Plot: Orphaned Mary Clancy is sent by her wealthy Uncle George to St. Francis Academy, a Catholic girls boarding school and convent. He has sent her there to straighten her out as she is rebellious (among other things, she is a heavy smoker), and is always carrying out her dubious but “scathingly brilliant ideas”. At St. Francis, she meets fellow student Rachel Devery, recently transferred from New Trends Progressive School. Rachel is a follower, Mary her leader. The two continually lead other students astray, especially Mary’s cousin, her Uncle George’s daughter, Marvel-Ann. They also butt heads with the school’s equally strong willed Mother Superior. Mary and Rachel’s antics bring them close to the verge of expulsion, but the Mother Superior feels she needs to be part of Mary’s salvation as Mary’s primary alternative, living with her womanizing Uncle George, is not even an option in the Mother Superior’s view. Ultimately, Mary’s inner curiosity and keen observances of life around her, supported unwittingly by the Mother Superior and the other Sisters, bring her to a turning point in her view of life at St. Francis, one at odds with her best friend.

PLEASE help me with english hmwk(similie, imagery, oxymoron, hyperbole?)?
can you find ten examples of four figurative language?
figurative language= similie, metaphor, personification, idiom, hyperbole, etc.(:

Step out the front door like a ghost
Into the fog where no one notices
The contrast of white on white.
And in between the moon and you
The angels get a better view
Of the crumbling difference between wrong and right.
I walk in the air between the rain
Through myself and back again
Where? I don’t know
Maria says she’s dying
Through the door I hear her crying
Why? I don’t know
Round here we always stand up straight
Round here something radiates
Maria came from Nashville with a suitcase in her hand
She said she’d like to meet a boy who looks like Elvis
And she walks along the edge of where the ocean meets the land
Just like she’s walking on a wire in the circus
She parks her car outside of my house
Takes her clothes off
Says she’s close to understanding Jesus
She knows she’s more than just a little misunderstood
She has trouble acting normal when she’s nervous
Round here we’re carving out our names
Round here we all look the same
Round here we talk just like lions
But we sacrifice like lambs
Round here she’s slipping through my hands
Sleeping children better run like the wind
out of the lightning dream
Mama’s little baby better get herself in
out of the lightning
She says "it’s only in my head"
She says "Shhhhh I know it’s only in my head"
But the girl on the car in the parking lot
Says "Man you should try to take a shot
Can’t you see my walls are crumbling?"
Then she looks up at the building
Says she’s thinking of jumping
She says she’s tired of life
She must be tired of something
Round here she’s always on my mind
Round here hey man got lots of time
Round here we’re never sent to bed early
and nobody makes us wait
Round here we stay up very, very, very, very late
I can’t see nothing.. nothing round here
Will you catch if I’m falling
Will you catch me if I’m falling
Will you catch me cause I’m falling down on you
I said I’m under the gun around here
I’m innocent I’m under the gun around here
And I can’t see nothing
Nothing round here

i need help picking what college i should go to!!?
I applied to four schools, and got into all four. I’m going to be a marine biology major, and that’s what I would like to do as a career. I might be living off campus with my significant other, so the cost of apartments and living for all places should be considered. I’m not so interested in one of the schools I applied to, but now I’m stuck trying to choose between three colleges. Here’s my list of schools, as well as a mini pros and cons bit.

University of New England: a private uni in maine–campus is gorgeous–right on the ocean–has tons of marine bio internship opportunities–tuition costs a lot–maine is cold

SUNY Stony Brook: Long Island (1-2 hours outside of the city)–my cheapest school–closest to home, but still far enough away for me–good marine bio program

Eckerd College: St. Petersburg, Florida–never been there or visited–most expensive school–most amazing marine biology experiences and research programs–I’ve heard that Florida is "a kind of icky place"

Go with SUNY
Warren | Feb 08, 2010

SUNY it’s the cheapest. it will take you the least amount of time to pay off your student loans, and where you graduate from really doesn’t make a difference in terms of job-seeking
Brianna S | Feb 08, 2010

I would NOT go to florida if cost of living is an issue. New England tends to have lower costs of living than long island/new york, but as it’s your cheapest school and close to home, you’ll probably have significantly lower travel costs, moving costs, etc (and if you visit home, sometimes your parents will send you back with groceries)
The Banana Tree | Feb 08, 2010

SUNY. You don’t seem to have listed anything bad about it (except maybe it being 1-2 hours outside of the city, but that may not be a bad thing).

Are these lyrics okay?
I don’t write much, but i wanted to try :)

The sun falls away,
Another night on the run in the last place they’d think to look.
We’re playing hangman in the sand, but I bet you can’t guess just what I’m thinking.
You swore it wouldn’t be like this forever,
but here we are again,
Rockin’ out to the same fucking song
we listened to last year.
Now the smoke is clearing,
and the sirens scream
You take another drag.

We are the mystery
another train of thought can’t bring you closer to solving.
We’re the ones your mother warned you of,
(the things that go bump in the night)
We’re the knife that won the gun fight,
and we’re never coming down.

Well I’m a
Liar,
A sinner,
And never a saint,
But I’m still holding all the cards.
And you can wear your poker face all night,
but it sure as hell won’t take you far….
It’s not done yet…i want to write moreverses….If it doesn’t remind you of My Chemical Romance, I didn’t do it right. lol
